THE WAR NOVEL

The aim of this conference is to explore the manner in which works of fiction have dealt with the long and complicated war in Lebanon. The physical devastation perpetuated by the war had a strong effect on people, yet the impact was all the more destructive when it came to people’s sense of commitment, memories and feelings. Therefore, it is not surprising that the war permeates works written by Lebanese and non-Lebanese writers either in the plot and incidents, or background and general atmosphere.

The purpose of the conference is to study and evaluate the war novel and track the course of its development. Four panels are distributed according to geographical affiliation. The first is on Arab writers, the second on authors who write in foreign languages and the third on Lebanese writers. The aim of the fourth panel is to initiate a dialogue that may uncover differences and expose diverse points of view.
