Book Discussion: “The Law of Desire: Temporary Marriage in Shi’i Islam”
New York Academic Center
Author Shahla Haeri will discuss Iran’s attempt to promote temporary marriage by hailing it as one of the most “brilliant” laws of Islam, in contrast to a much less enthusiastic public opinion. Furthermore, Haeri argues that people’s discontent stems from the dissonance between religious discourse and socio-economic realities.
Shahla Haeri is an associate professor of cultural anthropology and former director of the Women’s Studies Program at Boston University.
The event is organized by LAU’s New York Academic Center.
