“How I Learned to Drive” is a bittersweet drama written by Paula Vogel, that tells the story of a Maryland girl called “Little Bit” who takes a trip down memory lane and recalls memories of emotional manipulation and sexual molestation, all of which are tied together with driving lessons given by her uncle, “Uncle Peck”. Set mostly in the 60’s, the story is told using an uneven mixture of flashbacks, narration and monologues.
The play tackles some sensitive and controversial subject matters such as pedophilia, incest, sexual molestation, alcoholism, and family dysfunction without judgment or condemnation. The aim of the protagonist is to reach freedom thorough forgiveness.
Vogel received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the play. The play was also awarded an Obie, a Drama Desk Award, a New York Drama Critics’ Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and The Lucille Lortel Award.
