Ernst May and the New Frankfurt

Health Sciences Center Auditorium, Byblos campus

The Department of Architecture and Interior Design is hosting a symposium on Architecture, Planning and Social Housing.

The New Frankfurt was a public housing program launched in 1925 and completed in 1930. The project was initiated by Frankfurt’s mayor Ludwig Landmann, who hired the young architect Ernst May to lead the new Municipal Planning & Building department. Renowned architects like Max Cetto, Walter Gropius, Ferdinand Kramer and others collaborated on this large building program that spread across different sites around Frankfurt.

The symposium will discuss some of the aspects of the New Frankfurt project, covered by Claudia Quiring, co-editor of a comprehensive book on Ernst May, Julius Reinsberg from the Ernst May Foundation, and Elie Haddad, dean of the School of Architecture and Design at LAU.

The symposium will be followed by an exhibition at 1:00 p.m. that will feature some of the projects of the New Frankfurt.
