Performance: “Masters of Lebanese Zajal: An Evening of Poetic Dueling in Song”

211 E. 46th Street, LAU New York

The New York Academic Center, in partnership with the New Pen League, City Lore, and the Consul General of Lebanon Majdi Ramadan, is hosting a celebration of the Lebanese zajal tradition. This folkloric and cultural performance will be documented for the documentary film, River of Rhyme: Poetry Duels from Around the World and will draw attention to this venerable form of improvised poetry which still flourishes in Lebanon.

The performance will include two distinguished Lebanese poets:

Poet Adel Khaddaj is originally from Kfar Matta, Aley. He is the Vice President of the Union of Zajal Poets in Lebanon. He accompanied celebrated poets Zaghlool El-Damour and Mousa Zgaib for many years, and has several publications on Zajal.

Poet Dany Sfeir hails from Daraya, Keserwan, and is a member of the union of Zajal poets. He contested many poets of Lebanon.
