Tips for Carers (of Children Ages 12+): Getting Back to School and Creating a Safe Place to Talk

Children in Lebanon, in general, have been traumatized by the Beirut port explosion, which came after a long stretch of being locked down at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Some of these children might be expressing anxiety about separating from their parents, meeting their teachers and seeing their friends again. We, as carers, should expect some children to talk about the port explosion and the impact it might have had on them or their loved ones, whether directly or indirectly.
This workshop is intended for carers —primarily school teachers and parents— of children older than 12 years of age. The talk will be interactive, based on your concerns. We will:
- highlight some warning signs of children’s distress,
- discuss strategies to ease kids back to school, creating a safe space to discuss potential questions or stories they might have about the explosion as well as Coronavirus-related issues,
- talk about the importance of including parents in the process.
The webinar, organized jointly by LAU’s School of Arts & Sciences and Continuing Education, is in the form of a panel with two presenters and a moderator:
- Dr. Ahmad Oueini from the Department of Education
- Ms. Tala Al Nouweisser from the Dean of Students’ Office
- Dr. Myriam Malhame from the Department of Social Sciences (moderator)
Another talk focusing on children ages 3–12 will be offered on October 9.
