The lecture will tackle timely issues and challenges that have taken a toll on food safety in Lebanon, such as power cuts, public sector strikes, and weak infrastructure. The speakers will offer take-home messages and practical tips to cope, while the Nutrition Department at LAU Medical Center-Rizk Hospital will spotlight and expand on good manufacturing practices that have been compiled in this brochure.
Speakers’ biographies:
Dr. Hussein Hassan is the director of Academic Compliance and associate professor of Food Science and Technology at LAU. He received his BS and MS in Food Technology from the American University of Beirut and his PhD in Food Process Engineering from McGill University, Canada. Dr. Hassan’s research interests revolve around non-microbial food safety, food toxicology, food processing, and food waste, and his research has been published in more than 50 international journals and presented at scientific meetings. Dr. Hassan is a senior expert and consultant for local and international entities, including the Lebanese Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Industry, and Ministry of Public Health, in addition to USAID projects (LIVCD, ARE, LINQ and TIF), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Save the children, and Mercy Corps, among others.
Ms. Sandra Akiki is a clinical dietitian and a senior instructor. She has worked in healthcare institutions and in higher education. Skilled in counseling, nutrition education, clinical research, customer service and weight management, she adopts a patient-centered approach. Akiki holds an MS in Human Nutrition from Université Saint Joseph in Beirut.
This session offers one CPD credit for attendance, as will be recorded by the Continuing Medical Education Office.
