Shaken, Not Stirred: Understanding and Coping with Earthquake Risks
This lecture will provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of earthquakes, including the geological processes that cause them and the various hazards associated with them. It will also educate the audience on how to respond to medical emergencies that may occur during and after an earthquake, as well as showcase examples of earthquake response and recovery efforts, highlighting best practices and lessons learned from previous earthquakes in Turkey. Additionally, this lecture will provide participants with practical coping strategies to deal with the emotional and psychological impact of earthquakes, including self-care strategies and support resources.
Guest Speaker:
- Dr. Ülkümen Rodoplu, Emergency Physician, Family Medicine Specialist, Disaster Medicine Master Degree, Chair for Emergency Medicine Association of Turkey for All, Chair for European Society of Emergency Medicine Disaster Section Resilient Society Working Group. Dr. Rodoplu will showcase examples of earthquake response and recovery efforts, highlighting best practices and lessons learned from previous earthquakes in Turkey.
LAU Speakers:
- Dr. Grace Abou Jaoude, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, LAU School of Engineering.
Dr. Abou Jaoude will provide participants with an understanding of the science behind earthquakes.
- Dr. Mariana El Helou, Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of Division, Emergency Medicine, LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine.
Dr. El Helou will educate the audience on how to respond to medical emergencies during and after an earthquake.
- Dr. Wael Salame, Clinical Assistant Professor, Division of Psychiatry, LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine.
Dr. Salame will provide participants with practical coping strategies to deal with the emotional and psychological impact of earthquakes.
1.5 CME/CPD credits will be granted for the School of Medicine faculty members who will attend this lecture. Attendance will be recorded by the CME Office.
