The departments of Radiology and Neurology at the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine are organizing a conference on “Advancements in Stroke Management”.

This conference aims to explore the latest developments, innovative approaches, and cutting-edge advancements in the field of stroke management.

The event will feature distinguished speaker and expert Dr. Mohammad Abdel Kader, from Boston Medical Center, and Dr. Abdel Rahman Shatila, from the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine, who will share their insights and experiences in diagnosing, treating, and managing strokes effectively. The lecture will be followed by a half-hour open-floor discussion on the challenges of stroke treatment in the Lebanese healthcare system. The speakers will be discussing:

  • New frontiers and expanding indications in endovascular stroke treatment—by Dr. Mohammad Abdel Kader
  • Update on IV thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke—by Dr. Abdel Rahman Shatila
  • Medium and distal vessel occlusion thrombectomy—by Dr. Mohammad Abdel Kader

Speakers’ Biographies: 

Mohammad Abdel Kader, MD

Dr. Abdel Kader received his medical degree from the Lebanese University–Faculty of Medical Sciences in Beirut, Lebanon in 2011. He completed a residency in Radiology at the Lebanese University in Beirut and at the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium from 2011 to 2016 with dedicated training in interventional and neurointerventioal radiology. He was awarded diplomas in Radiology Specialty and Interventional Radiology from Europe. He also completed an ACGME-accredited diagnostic neuroradiology and interventional neuroradiology fellowships at BMC before joining as an attending physician in 2018.

Dr. Abdul Kader has over 180 publications in prestigious journals (Lancet, JAMA Neurology, Radiology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Stroke, JNIS). In his research, he has published on the endovascular treatment of acute stroke, intracranial aneurysms, neurovascular manifestations of COVID-19 infections, and venous diseases of the central nervous system. Through his publications, he has explored new indications for endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases and written about innovative techniques to address these complex pathologies. Dr. Abdel Kader’s expertise and contributions have garnered recognition on both national and international platforms, as he has been invited to present his work at prestigious meetings in the field of diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology (SNIS, ASNR, RSNA, SVIN).  Dr. Abdel Kader has been a reviewer and associate editor of several journals.

Abdel Rahman Shatila, MD

Dr. Shatila received his MD degree from the American University of Beirut, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine. He then pursued a residency in Neurology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. In 1991, he completed a subspecialty in Clinical Neurophysiology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Shatila served as the Head of the Neurology Department at Rafic Hariri University Hospital and was also a clinical professor of Neurology at the Beirut Arab University School of Medicine. In 2021, he joined the LAU Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury School of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Dr. Shatila’s areas of expertise include stroke neurology, multiple sclerosis, headache, and neurophysiology.

1.5 CME/CPD credits will be granted for the school of medicine faculty members. Attendance will be recorded by the CME Office.
