Breaking Silence: Art, Women, and the Lebanese Civil War

This panel will provide a platform for artists, scholars, faculty, and students to engage in long-overdue discussions on the Lebanese Civil War, women’s labor, and the creative arts.
The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Dr. Yasmine Taan.

3:05–3:10 | Myriam Sfeir, Executive Director, Arab Institute for Women, will introduce the institute. |
3:10–3:20 | Dr. Michelle Hartman, Professor of Arabic Literature, Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University, will introduce the book Women’s War Stories. |
3:20–3:30 | Dr. Zena Meskaoui will discuss her chapter, “Warring Body: Art and Life in Lina Majdalanie’s Appendice.” |
3:30–3:40 | Dr. Yasmine Taan will discuss her chapter, “Disaster Seen by Three Female Contemporary Lebanese Artists.” |
3:40–3:50 | Ginane Makki Bacho, a prominent Lebanese artist, will share her experiences and reflections on producing art during the Lebanese Civil War. |
3:50–4:00 | Samar Mogharbel, a renowned Lebanese ceramist, will present an installation created during times of conflict in Lebanon. |
