The High School Mathematics Contest

The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics and the LAU Math Club at the School of Arts and Sciences are organizing a two-day mathematics competition for grade 11 and 12 students. Schools can participate in a maximum of two teams of up to five individuals each. Participation is free of charge.

With the goal of discovering young and talented mathematicians and math enthusiasts, the contest consists of two stages. During the first stage on April 5, students will be assessed through teams of three to four individuals on topics in pre-calculus, basic algebra, probability, logic and geometry.

Teams with the top scores are eligible to participate in the second stage, to be held three weeks following the first stage on April 26. Individuals of the winning teams will be assigned a fairly advanced math topic to research thoroughly on the spot and present in the presence of LAU faculty members and Math Club members.

Up to five individual winners will be selected; the selection is based on the presentation and the knowledge of the topic, as well as on the demonstrated mathematical skills at play.

Prizes include scholarships for potential Math majors at LAU.

• First prize: 30% scholarship
• Second prize: 20% scholarship
• Third prize: 10% scholarship
