The School of Architecture and Design is organizing Arts and Crafts in the Late Ottoman Empire: Rethinking Practices and Concepts of Material Culture in Syria and Beyond (18th–Early 20th Century), in collaboration with the Orient-Institut Beirut.

Convened by LAU’s Dr. May Farhat and Dr. Sarah Sabban, this two-day hybrid conference brings together scholars of Islamic art and architecture for eight panels exploring material production, artistic practices and cultural history in Bilad al-Sham and the wider Ottoman Empire.

The conference will feature Dr. Marcus Milwright as its online keynote speaker and Dr. Anke Scharrahs as an invited in-person speaker.
